You can get approval to make some NFA weapons. A short barrel rifle, SBR, is a NFA weapon. You just go on the BATFE E Forms site, fill out a Form 1, upload your documents, and pay $200. It takes about thirty days to get approval. It comes in the form of a Tax Stamp, like the old British Crown Tax stamps back in the colonial days.

I just submitted one for a suppressor. They are also governed by the NFA.

Any Other Weapons, AOW’s also require a tax stamp. Things like a vertical forward grip on a pistol are AOW’s. The tax is only $5 for a vertical grip.

Thanks for the info on the recr's. I feel the average Texas gun owner could give a "rat's a$$" about what the feds want. Hopefully, TX will revert to being a nation before they decide confiscation will become an option...

I should have been more clear You have to apply for the stamp prior to building an NFA weapon. To make it qualify for registration it has to have a serial number. I must admit I was thinking more on the lines of select fire.

30 days? Wow! Just a couple of months ago the wait was four to six months by E-filing and as much as nine months by mail. The E-filing required a trust. Has that changed again?

Approval times are all over the place and often vary from state to state.

The last E-Form I did for an SBR took 30 days. Before that I did an E-Form 6 to import some C1 SMG parts from Canada and it took 18 days.

I had two paper Form 4’s approved this week. They took 35 days. I have others that have been pending for 5 months.

I really have no idea what drives approval times. Six or seven months doesn’t bother me. I look at the wait as just part of owning real machine guns, etc. When I lived in the UK, Germany and Spain I never dreamed of owning real machine guns. So having this freedom is something I appreciate. It comes with restrictions, but they are quite reasonable in my opinion.

Also , the tax to BUILD an AOW ( form 1 ) is $200 as it is for all other form 1s . A class 7 mfg can build it tax free and then the TRANSFER from him to you is $5 .
