i was going to suggest grinding an angle on the bolthead, then i saw this:

(parker hiscock bolt head on the right)

i'm assuming the insert is intended to drop down in a flat plane not tilt.

would you fit two rollers on the front of the insert or one on the top front and one on the bottom rear of the insert?

would it be worth setting the insert up to pivot around the bottom rear corner?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The bolthead mod is documented in the LoC with the introduction of the magazine... LoC 17621 dated 21 Dec 1915.

Point of interest, the only rifles to be fitted with the magazine were the Pattern 14 rifle (Pattern 14 No1, before the Pattern 14 No2 came along) and the .22Short Rifle MkIII. The "magazine, .22-inch rifle, Mark 1" as it was named was declared obsolete with LoC entry 23766 on 8 Nov 1920. There was no mention of any other rifles that it was approved for, although the introduction of the Pattern 14 No2 in 1916 probably got included as well under the initial entry as being a "Pattern 14" rifle.

I have both the No1 and No2 Pattern14 rifle and both are modified for the Parker Hiscock magazine, in fact the No2 came complete with its Parker Hiscock mag.

I have one that is tiny bit worn from use but still fully functionable.

I am pondering on selling it to part fund a new Beretta shotgun.

I've often wondered why someone hasn't developed an affordable 10-rnd mag for the .22 trainers; surely it's just a case of modifying a standard .22 rifle magazine to fit into an SMLE magazine casing somehow?

If only it were that simple!

The main difficulty lies in getting the full sized bolt to strip and feed a small diameter, very short rimfire round into the chamber. Once that is solved, extraction and disposal of the fired case are relatively simple to work out.
The P-H magazine system with its push-rod system for feeding into the chamber still seems to be the best technical solution. An upgraded (read "simplified") version of this, perhaps produced with modern 3-D printing methods, would be most useful in the .22 trainers.

I wonder if a simplified, modernised Parker-Hiscock style magazine - made by an appropriately licenced armourer - using a 3D printer would be strong enough to withstand repeated use? Like I said, I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to do it years ago (albeit without the 3D printing, obviously!)
