Need help choosing scope mount and rings.

I have no experience with optics and the different mounting systems. My head is starting to spin with all the different choices of mounts and rings. The newest rifle in the safe was made in the 50's. I don't have eye trouble so it's been all irons the way it was meant to be.

My Eldest gave me a Remington SPS tactical in .308 and a Simmons 3-9-40mm scope for Christmas "he couldn't wait because he's like me and can't keep a secret" .

My questions are, One piece or a two piece mount? Picatinny or Weaver? 20 moa or not?
I shoot mostly on a 100yd range to get my giggles. This will be strictly a target rifle. Just some general help before I place an order would be appreciated.

A one piece steel Picatinny base and good quality steel rings like Burris Z rings. It should do 1 moa at 100 yards. If you upgrade your scope to a 30mm later in life, all you'll need is a new set of Z rings in 30mm.

Why Picatinny over weaver? One piece I get, more ridged. I realize now I don't need a 20 moa mount.
A question on ring height, how do I determine the height I need? I assume high enough to clear the bell and low enough to give a good cheek weld or is there more voodoo involved? I'm thinking as low as I can get.
One more question....Where do babies come from?....

Better check the other end on the zoom ring as I have seen guys fit scopes and the bell fits ooohhhh dear look at that I cannot fully cycle the bolt or get the bolt out of the weapon or in either or. You do not say what size the objective is 40 - 52 - 56mm toddle off to the gun shop with the rig and mock it up that way you get the thing right from the get go.

The Burris signature rings are the go as they work on a gimble type ring system that you can have - 10 on the top + 10 at bottom on the rear set and a + 10 and -10 on the front ring set to give you 10 MOA with a zero rail. Plus if there is any differentials in the 2 rings it will automatically align and not stress the scope tube, I run these on 2 of my rifles they are really good.

It's 40mm, 3-9-40mm. Ok, so the ideal height will allow clearance all around and a good cheek weld, correct?

The Picatinny is mil spec and has much more versatility as far as setting up the scope properly for proper eye relief and eliminating extension rings, etc. Just my opinion of course. You may want to upgrade the scope some day too and you won't have to change anything.

Get the rings that keep your scope as low as possible over the barrel without fouling the bolt. I'd guess medium Burris Z rings for your 40mm objective lens.

Went with the advice with one exception. Went with a one piece Picatinny and medium tacticool Burris rings. Not a bad group for Rounds throw together with Hornady 150g FMJ and LC brass. Plus it's 15F outside and I couldn't feel my fingers. This rifle is going to make me giggle out loud once I work up some pills and it gets a bit warmer out.
