Savage 99 takedown barrels
Not military but does anyone know if the Savage 99 takedown rifles were specific to their barrels or if barrels of different calibers could be used on the same frame and receiver? I know there is a 300 Savage/410 paired barrel set rifle but can't find any info on any of the others being compatible.

I once owned, (and then foolishly sold) a splendid 99 take-down in .250 Savage. It came with SAVAGE marked ammo in the original packets. Sold it in a fit of poverty.
The barrel threads would appear to be the same across the calibre range.
HOWEVER, the "spools" for the rotary magazines are CARTRIDGE SPECIFIC.
A .410 barrel? These seem to have been paired with .300 savage barrels, otherwise the tapers on the rifle-calibre spool would not work with the .410 shotgun ammo

I was looking for parts for a 99 I have and noticed a lot of barrels for sale so I was curious. I figured the rotary magazine would have some limitations but if the cartridges are similar I would think it would work. Not planning to try it. Mine is a pretty old one, straight stock. Haven't hunted with it for quite a few years. The part I needed was the lever bushing screw for a later 99 I do hunt with. Has a terrible looking stainless phillips head screw in it at present. Did get a bushing screw last week finally but haven't had a chance to swap it out yet.
