Photo of my uncle (Hump Pilot) in the CBI Theater

My uncle Warren flew C47 & C46 cargo planes over the Himalayas' as a "Hump" Pilot in the China, Burma, India theater of WWII. He crash landed twice and survived without serious injury. Many of his friends, however, are still in the mountains.
He is on the left with the Thompson. DiAngelo in the center has an M1 carbine. Wilhelm on the right has an M1 Garand. They all had 1911's and their jeep had a mounted .50 Cal. M.G.
The back of the picture says they were hunting (R&R) in Yunnan Province of China in 1945.
Warren passed away six years ago, but his memory has kept me grounded in 1945.

If you were ever a "car guy", you'd recognize the name Henry "Smokey" Yunick. He was a hump pilot too, cant help but wonder if they ever crossed paths. Do you have any reference to him?

Sorry Russ. I don't recognize the name. Not unusual with so many serving. You might want to look up CBI Roundup. A magazine for that theater.
I tried to take my uncle to the Hump Pilots' Association reunion, but he declined since all the guys he knew were already gone.

Smokey's family published his autobiography (posthumously, I believe) called "Best Damned Garage in Town". There were a few chapters on his WWII service detailing the hump flights, about time to pull it out for another read...
