    What? an SSA MKIII?

Yes, something I thought I'd never see: a peddled scheme MKIII by SSA: The * is crossed out. Is this one of those conversions supposedly done in India (?) after the First World War where they actually bothered to strip SMLEs and backdate them to MkIIIs by machining the wall of the receiver?
I didn't buy it but wondered if anyone round these parts managed to get it: definitely an "interesting" piece.

Nice rifle. I'm very interested in the SSA and NRF produced rifles. Your's looks like it has new woodwork on it.
I have got an SSA Mk III too, although deactivated unfortunately, but it was such a rare beast I wanted to get hold of it!
I'll check it out when I get home, from memory it's had the * struck out too. Got a feeling it might be marked N on the lhs of the butt socket which indicates Navy issue. Again from memory i think the navy preferred or specified Mk III with a cut off even when the main military spec was for Mk III* without. Again this needs corroborating first as I need to check my recall of the facts...!

Update. Mine's a 1918 Mk III with the * struck out. SSA marking on the lhs of the rear of the receiver.
No N marking on lhs of butt socket but two numbers - 42 and 51 probably denoting when it went in for ftr or repair
