Used mineral spirits to degunk late WRA

Soaked 18 hours, just metal, including bolt, and slide, recoil plate, plus barreled receiver, used nylon brush, oil, still has shadows of cosmolineicon, but thicker gunk came off.
Pics below, some were taken before I used towel to get more gunk off, still nice green phosphate is stained. I think its new, but what else will remove the stains?
My sons pic, [home from USMC] got in there too...

I usually soak the metal in Kero and use a stiff nylon brush.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

Try some lacquer thinner and a brush. I have also used carb cleaner with benzene but it is hard to find.

I won't tell you that while in the army (1968-1977) we soaked cosmolined ordnance in various tubs of gasoline, because you and I both know that such an exercise would be in direct contravention of safety rules.

    LOL Dale,

You must have served in the same Army I did.

I participated in the turn in of M14icon's on Active Duty; Garands, Carbines, BAR's, M-3's and M14s in the Guard as well as drawing M-14's and M-16's as replacements in the Guard. The only thing I can say is those that turned in the pieces I drew slopped em as full of cosmolineicon as I did the one's I turned in.

I am especially careful of any flammable substance today - Murphy might miss you but he never forgets!

Nothing better or faster for cleaning cosmo and grime from metal parts without harming the finish.
