I'm looking at a WWI era Winchester Mod. 1897 trench gun. It's in the E652,000 serial number range, with no U.S. or ordnance markings. It has a 6-row handguard with the patent dates on the left side of the bayonet adapter, rather than the "Pat. Appl. For" on the right side. My older Canfield guide implies that this may be a later commercial item. Is this still the current thought? The gun has about 60% original finish, the high comb butt stock (with a hairline crack at the tang), "Cyl" marked barrel, sling swivels and a near perfect bore. Is it likely worth on the order of the $2200 asking price? Thanks for any opinions.
