No5 mk1, missing head on rear sight.

Bought another No5 mk1 ‘Jungle Carbine’. It has a broken sight adjustment screw, the screw head is completely gone on it. I was wondering on how to repair it. Is the head a separate piece from the screw/shaft itself? It does not seem likely that it is; because, on the schematics I have found on the internet, and in Skennerton’s, A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines, it shows it being one solid screw, not two separate pieces. The rest of the sight seems fine, as in it is not bent, or out of line, thats why I am curious if its two pieces or just one.

It's one piece and it differs from the one on a No.4 sight in that it's only threaded about half-way up. I don't know of a source but you might ask Brian at BDL Ltd.

In the UK, new-old-stock No5 rear sights are available, approx $30 each + P&P; they've also appeared on ebay and are not scarce. I can send you an address in the UK who has them for sale.

Or you can just do what we did a zillion times. Just replace the sheared-off screw and nut with a good one from a No4 if they're handy (from Brian at BDL Ltd in SC). You will also need the little clicker ball too. It's an easy fix providing you get TWO balls because you WILL loose the first one! Assemble it all up inside a pillow case using a dob of grease on the ball so that when the first ball flies out - as it will - you'll be able to keep tabs on it

Gads getting two balls is okay but losing one as it flies out is just to much pain to think about Peter

Thanks for the answers. And Peter, when I look at an exploded drawing, it calls it a plunger, is that what you mean by ball.

There are two types. One is a plunger and the other is a simple ball. The plunger was never available through the Ordnance system. If you ordered a pack of, say five, you'd simply get 5 balls. So balls it is!

Like I say many times. The Ordnance parts list is a list of parts and not a list of AVAILABLE parts.

I managed to get a supply of the minute ball bearings from a local dealer (Germany) .... but was unable to manage the repair (was just too fiddly), so gave up on it
