MkVI Sten Gun Silencer Length

Bit of an obscure one... what was the length of the silencer / suppressor fitted to the MkVI Sten? I've seen a published length of 12 3/4" for the one fitted to the MkII(s), but is the MkVI the same? I know it had different internals.

All in a nice little book about the Sten Gun as I'm lead to believe. Off at a tangent........ You could easily make a replica Mk6 if you machined away the sleeve on the existing barrel nut and welded a full length 'silencer' onto it. Make a muzzle plug and you're good to go. But you must machine the body casing dovetail to take the Mk2 foresight. Maybe everyone ought to get an extra Mk5 while they're still available and make a Mk6 replica. And before you ask, doing so will not alter its lawful dewat status if you do

As for the foresight; you could always pretend it's a trials MkV(s) whose clamp on foresight has gone AWOL...

Yes, I've owned a copy for 15 years or so - very much the Sten bible. I also had the SAIS for the MkII and MkIII Sten, but not the one for the MII(s), MkV and MkVI. I'm planning to strip my MkV shortly, for which the SAIS will be invaluable.

You could contact zib and ask if he would make one the correct length.

The Zib Militaria 'silencers' are just empty tubes for decorating deacts and I assume they're made in India or suchlike. I suppose in theory the end pieces could be recycled onto a correct length of 1.5" tube - depends how they're attached.

I'm not sure that a barrel that short would re-cock the gun because by the time the bullet had left the v-short barrel, the gas would have dissipated to atmosphere much earlier than it should and in doing so, wouldn't have imparted sufficient energy to the breech block to enable the .......... anyway. Or am I being a tad pedantic?

I didn’t see the barrel you’re talking about. How long is it?

I have a four inch barrel in a Mk7 Sterling pistol. I wouldn’t go any shorter than that. I am afraid there wouldn’t be enough rifling to stabilize the bullet properly and I might get a suppressor baffle strike.

When I lightened the aluminum bronze breech block for my Mk5 Sten I used the weight from your Sten machine carbine book. It works perfectly. What’s interesting to me is it will cycle every weight of bullet I have. The 115gr makes some noise, 124gr, 147gr and 158gr all run flawlessly. 158gr cycles very slowly, making single shots very easy with the selector in automatic. You also see the bullet just before it hits the target a 50 yards. When there’s a Foggy Foggy Dew you can also see the swirl (vapor trail) from the bullet for a good long way.

Apparently the dummy silencers from Zib Militaria are 8cm too short. Spoilt for a ha'porth of tar...
