You nailed it.
I am quite pleased with this one. I did not really realize how nice it was until I got it home & looked closley. Thinking the price was pretty good also.

You get some of the credit for posting all your finds. Inspired me to stop and smell the cosmoline. Also found 2 NOS helmets 1 Swiss 1 US both unussued with multiple covers in the original packinging.
I think the Swiss is an M71 but with nylon suspention. The us looks to be 80's vintage? It even had a NOS nylon butt pack stuffed inside.

I've advanced to them giving me stuff now (yard sales, not flea markets). Talked to a Vietnam vet for about 10 minutes and left with a WWII folding shovel. Talked to another fellow in same development and walked out with a Garand stock, 1950's but in decent shape.

I had the oppertunity to visit with a Vietnam vet in my travels last week. We were both poking around an antique shop in the ozarks. Nice fellow. I've found there are some folks who lack sentimentality but recognize it in others and are willing to pass an item of historic value into good hands.
