    Slow

This site is sooo slow. Yes, I have dial-up but the old board was way faster. Takes forever to get the main page open and then you have to click and wait to get CSPicon and to open individual thread is another wait. Am I the only one or is anyone else having this problem? I notice postings are way down, but they were falling off on the old board too.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Yes, unfortunately this modern software is graphics intensive and not really designed or built well for use with 56kb dial-up users in mind...

Until higher bandwidth cable, or wireless type services become more widely available, it will continue to be a problem as the use of the Internet and even more video and graphics intensive applications appear.

I know that some members out in the boondocks subscribe to satellite based Internet service, which is good for data coming down to the user's computer, but not up, which on-line multiplayer gamers need. It is pretty good for Internet browsing for sites like this, but it can be pricey.

Another option I've seen people with slow data links like dial-up use is RSS Feeds. Milsurps.Com forums (including Joustericon) fully supports RSS Feeds.

Go to CSP (Culver's Shooting Page) RSS Feeds (click here). Read about RSS and then go down the page to the "Jouster.Com" forum display and select the forums you want "pushed" out to you. For example, I get the RSS feeds for all of the new posts sent to my Apple iPhone and can sit and read them in airports, with nothing more than a 3G telephone wireless connection. Works pretty darn good and is of course excellent if you have a Wi-Fi connection, or you're sitting at home in front of a real computer.

For people with regular high speed connections, using RSS is a GREAT way to stay current without having to come here constantly. Rather than visiting a series of Web pages every day, many Web users are installing RSS newsreaders and configuring them to pull RSS feeds to them. It's like having news delivered to your desktop! So, when you visit any site, not just this one, look for the small button to see if that site supports RSS readers. They even integrate right into your Yahoo or Google pages. Our button is right at the VERY bottom of the screen and you can click on it anytime to configure this site for your own RSS needs.

Even with RSS feeds, you would still have the dial-up slowness if you choose to go and read an ENTIRE post, but at least this way you get to select the posts you want to read without having to login and go through the whole site.

Finally, often any slowness with this site isn't the site itself. It can be the intermediate computing devices such as routers between the member and us. One way to quickly test as to how fast the Jouster Forums Home Page loads if accessed from someplace else, wold be to click on this link:

    Pingdom Tools (click here)

With average loading, our server generally returns about 10 - 12 seconds for the very first time it's accessed, which that test site does all the time. It's always a first time access from their location. You'll find that result at the bottom of their report.

Why is that important? In simple terms, when you access the Jouster Forums direct (not using that test site!) for the first time yourself with a reasonably fast bandwidth connection, you should see it takes about 10 - 12 seconds to display the whole page. However, if you have your Internet browser's "cache" turned ON (you should!), then the next time you click on the same link it will be substantially faster, because the images and other larger files are accessed from your local computer rather than downloads from across the Internet again. On our site, second cached load times for the same page generally run from 1/2 second to 1 1/2 seconds! Check your browser. If you have "cache" turned OFF, you are operating on ALL web sites (not just here) at speeds much slower than you need to be.

Hope this helps everyone better understand the relationship between Internet speed and web sites, plus some options people can try to mitigate slow connections or sites.

    Regards,
    Badger

The best way to analyze anything us using empirical data ...

This system software maintains a ton of useless and not so useless statistics about activity.

In the first 9 days of these new Joustericon forums, posting is up over 30% as compared to the last 9 days on the old Jouster forums. CSP members are averaging over 120 unique new threads per day, or 600+ individual new posts a day.

The most registered members posting over a 24 hour period was 256, today at 09:19 AM

The most number of online users at one time has been 210 (Yesterday 10:39 PM).

Total registered members that have visited the forum in the last 24 hours: 1,155

Total registered members that have posted on the forum in the last 24 hours: 252

Since the Jouster forums permit "lurkers" who don't have to register to view posts in regular forums, the total number of guests that have visited the forum in the last 24 hours is 4,378, which does not include search robots.

Total number of websites who have referred visitors today to the Jouster forums today (since midnight): 383

    Don't you love trivia ...

    I like stat's.
Now, split that out to just CSPicon stat's, not milsup.com. Or is that what your quoting.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
The post counts are purely Joustericon, however, the member data is integrated and I can't separate that ....

We had 4,250 members before March 1st and in the last 9 days, that's gown to 6,013 as of 5 minues ago......

So, I suppose you could do some extrapolation from there, but I think the data would be skewed. Prior to the CSP community arriving, our site was primarily a research site using the "read only" Knowledge Librariesicon organized by country. Postings were a by product of that ...

Now, it seems to have swung to lots and lots of posting of linear threads as you'd find on most Internet forums.

    Badger

This site is much faster, however you folks have to understand that down loading and up loading speed on the internet can vary according to the time of day and useage of the internet. No being a computer intellectual, I can only repeat what I have been told. I do know there are times that I open a link in an e mail and it is only downloading at 23 kb. Other times it is as high as 230 to 250.

I would guess that Badger being an administrator might be able to confirm this.

Thanks Badger for the info. I expect once the word gets out to all the old CSPicon posters, those figures will increase significantly. Would appreciate an update just to see what the increase in traffic amounts to.

Try the text-only web browser - LYNX - doesn't download ANY graphics. The web pages my get screwy, but it should speed up your internet connection for text stuff.

    http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~kennethkwok/lynx/

PS Forget the link listed above. LYNX is too difficult to use. If you use the FIREFOX web browser, goto the TOOLS -> OPTIONS menu. Under the CONTENT icon, unckeck the "Load Images Automatically" and things should speed up for you considerably. Then, to remove the animations, goto TOOLS -> ADD-ONS and install FLASHBLOCK. You should start zipping right along.
