He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

A headmaster of mine served in Italyicon during the war and he was still there in 1945 when it ended. All he would tell us was that he served in the Army in Italy and he would never go into any detail which, I guess, he took to the grave. Sadly, his brother was killed elsewhere in a Sunderland flying boat but I am not sure if it was due to enemy action or an accident.

Interesting to see the censor has masked the left shoulder flash of the middle GI, plenty of spray and pray between that lot

Cisterna (Cisternia) sounded familiar, so I checked Dad's log books. He was there from May 30 through June 5, 1944 flying artillery observation in an L-4H. From the entries, the artillery was busy all those days: "fired on enemy guns, fired on enemy tanks and counter attack, fired on enemy troops and C.P., fired on enemy convoy on Highway 7, and flew over Rome - got enemy flak".

It cool to see pictures from the same time.

I saw that too, they seem to have missed the odd thing from time to time.
