Seems to be the answer. There was a lot of gnashing of teeth when the 51mm mortar was declared obsolete after a short life. It really was 'section artillery'.
That is an interesting TO&E item, we would run with a 60mm Mortar, GPMG, and Carl G at the platoon level, while the sections would have 2x LMG, 2x M203, and the remainder riflemen.

I should clarify our 60mm was a US M2 Mortar, sourced during the Korean War, not the M6-alphabet soup Austrian mortar.
Still great piece of kit though, despite the age.
