Come a bit closer Cinders - if you're doubting my memory and the fact that we used to go there fairly regularly. Regardless of wikipedia or anything else says, the HMS Terror of the 60's was the Navy shore base on the North East of Singapore.

Got that Cinders. HMS Vernon is now a shopping outlet village in Portsmouth. Was there a week ago - and had my car clamped for good measure!

Well, just for interest sake...as we speculate onward about what the casing may or may not be, the OP hasn't been on since he asked the question. One post, ask and leave. 26th of Sep. That was just under a month ago. So much for his intense interest...

I wonder if Singapore Naval base was originally called something else, pre war, when first built; something at the back of my mind tells me it was? It could have been renamed HMS Terror post war after the ship was lost, perhaps in honour or memory. I believe that there was a certain amount of name changing immediate post war partly due to ships lost during WW2. Both HMS Ark Royal and Eagle, which entered service in the 1950s, were originally going to be called something else when first ordered during WW2 together with 2 further sister ships that were never built due to the end of the war. The 2 carriers had their names changed to Ark Royal and Eagle before completion, I assume, in remembrance of their namesakes lost during the war.



The Naval dockyard (repair/refit of warships) may have been called something different to the Naval shore base (where personnel and ships are stationed when not at sea) at Singapore? In other words there may have been 2 shore bases at Singapore, with different names, at the same time?
