the pull towards collecting oilers is a strong one, but i'm still managing to resist.

cinders, I put a bid on that one too but as I knew it wasn't 100% correct (edit: 100% correct for my commercial metford) I wasn't willing to compete with the collectors.

    Recessed Cap Oiler

These are pictures of the oiler with the recessed cap which may be of interest to anyone who hasn't seen such a version before. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that only Enfield produced the recessed cap version; is anyone able to confirm this, please?

As we know NZicon has loads of Long Lees, mainly shipped just before WW1 from Canadaicon and Englandicon, however I suspect they were never shipped with the early oilers as they are super rare in NZ.

You have a Harcourt screw cap on an Enfield bottle there - Harcourt were the manufacturers of that type and if you are lucky there should be a "Harcourts patent" stamp on the stem of the spoon.

I can't see a patent mark on the stem but will have another look over the weekend when I've located my magnifier.

No certainly hasn't got that Patent mark on the spoon stem. Perhaps more than one manufacturer made them with a recessed cap?

I think perhaps some were lightly struck, or missed, because not all the recessed cap versions are marked with the patent.
    Interesting variation though!

Just checked my rebated lid oiler, it's marked Harcourt patent on the spoon but the base is marked EFD.
Also both Metford oilers are WD marked on the base.

I'll try and take some pictures of my collection over the next few days and add them to this thread.
