Early L96A1 magazine

I picked this up recently - it appears as if it is an early L96A1 magazine but without the tabs on the base. Hopefully Peter will concur.Attachment 77026 Attachment 77027 Attachment 77028

Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I THINK that you are right. There were three different types issued with the rifles, issued as spare parts and used. The ears on the base simply made it easier to remove.

That looks like a standard "coffin Bottom" L96 mag. The "winged" type that has the two tabs either side of the base appeared with the AW and is interchangeable with the Green Meanie.
If you would like to see a early, early L96 mag then there is one on the PM rifle currently for sale on the Devizes Gunsmith website.
