1952 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant single shot trainer

It's a 1952 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant single shot training rifle in 7.62x54r, one of hand full that arrived stateside mixed in with some refurb's back in the early 90's.

This reminds me of how I took for granted my neighbor whom I took shooting for the first time knew how to use sights. Once I drew a picture he started hitting paper.

Were these guns purpose built or were they damaged/worn guns refurbed into single shot rifles for training? I ask as I can't quite tell if there are any provisions for a clip in the receiver. It's interesting to me because the stock is obviously purpose built given it's probably faster to just not route out a magazine well on a new stock vs plug up an old one.

These where purpose built rifles, not old converted Mosins. What is really odd is why, in 1952, with all the Mosin Nagants lying around in arsenal storage they would even produce these rifles. There are 3 of them I have so far documented and one of them has a different S/N prefix so one can conclude there where possibly up to 2,000 of these produced (999 per prefix) yet more have not surfaced. This rifle was bought from an retired employee of CAI who unpacked these rifles when they came in, buying this one you see above.
