1896 Spanish Mauser

I had a guy inquire of me today as to a price for his 1896 Spanish Mauser.
I know everything is subjective but If there is a ball park to be had please speak up as I have only a vague idea. It is a rifle with the crest on it, all the wood is present, the serial # is n1000 and all the numbers I could find matched serial number. The action is a little sticky and it is dirty. Looks like it was in a closet for a long time. NO import info, he wants to sell it.

'aspen80' - Photos of your friend's Spanish Mauser will get a lot of more accurate feed-back.

Although it may be dated "Berlin 1896" beneath the Spanish Crest (manufacture date), it is actually a Model 1893 Spanish Mauser.

The value will depend on Condition and Originality. Many Model 1893 Mausers, (even German made ones), were rebuilt at Oviedo in the 1920s and 1930s. These rebuilt arms often had Rear-Sight changes and Stock replacement. Many saw hard service in the Spanish Civil War.

A Model 1893 Spanish Mauser, built in 1896 by a German Maker, likely saw service in the Spanish American War. If it is all original, as manufactured by Loewe or DWM, with original rear-sight and stock, it is more desirable and valuable. It becomes likely, it never went back to Spain and may be a SAW captured rifle.

Need photos of the crest also to make sure it's the original one, not a later reworked one. Original crests bring a premium. One problem is that the market just got flooded with them. There is a guy going around the shows selling off rifles he got in the SAMCO sell off for $149.00. Many of these have the original crests which is what I was looking for. All are dirty and covered in grease so you could probably add $50 for the cleaning. Before that happened they had been selling for about $250 for no crest and maybe $50-$100 more for one with an original crest. Condition is also key. Most of these floating around are pretty worn, some were converted to 308.

I would think something in the $150-$175 range is right. Most are beat-up and have worn bores.

I paid $300 for my 7 mm, 1894 Loewe, a couple of years ago. It was arsenal rebuilt/restocked, the crest was faint, and it had the later 'Oviedo' rear-sight slide. However, the bore was Mint, all the metal parts were Loewe with matching #s (except the Oviedo slide), and the Spanish even numbered the stock to match the receiver.

I enjoy it with its extensive history and it is a fine shooter!

That is what they are being sold as yes. Mine is dated 1914 so I question it's official designation, might be a conversion. I saw a lot of early dates on them when I was going through them.

I have seed a couple of these cosmoline queens in .308. If I see a 7mm I dont think i can resist.

I just bought a M93 Spanish Mauser on a whim because I would like a Spanish American War era Mauser. It has a cut down stock but the barrel is original length, I am hoping it is a US capture gun that was sporterized in the states. Paid too much more it, 200 after all is said and done, I will probably be putting 100 more into it, but I don't get around much and I like to try to bring guns back from the dead, more as a wall hangar but also something with stock repairs, to make it living history friendly. Crest appears all but gone, with Oberndorf 1896 markings. Oddly enough, when looking for parts ran across a 1896 manufacture date Oviedo 93 arsenal restored complete for 325, but the crest and date were gone. Serial number put it in the 1896 date. I would think that the german made pre 1898 Spanish Mausers would go for more but probably guns are out there if you look hard and visit where they are.
I am thinking about "robbing" some other period Mauser rifle stock of the forend and grafting onto the Spanish stock, I have a wood guy that could make that happen for a favor. Any suggestions as to what model mauser stock might be a good donor for a forend? I would be using spanish m93 hardware to finish out the barrel end of the gun, those parts seem to be in abundance.
