Yes your whole rifle was refurbed in 1954. Most likely completely stripped and rebuilt.
Good to see wood wasn't removed to fit the sight plate!

Can you add the Serial Number to the Lithgow Survey, it would be appreciated.
The AE on the H barrel dates the barrel manufacture as about 1953 also.

Very nice Lithgow, yep FTR'd in 1954, (any worn parts would have been replaced at that point), probably had very few rounds through her since then, looking at the general condition. Have fun shooting and let us know how you get on.

Definitely no H on there that I could see.
Taking it to the farm on the weekend. Have 20 rounds of factory sellier & bellot to try it out.
My dad is excited to see it, his words were I carried a 42 during Korea.

I see you found this group, mate. Great place to learn and swap info on these rifles. I just asked on the Australian Shooter forum last night about the date on the barrel, thinking it was an FTR (Factory Thorough Repair).
As you have found out and confirmed here, you have a very nice original Lithgow FTR! These rebuilds were of the highest quality and better than equal to any SMLE from anywhere. Congrats
Post the results of your shooting on the W/E.

I would not use steel wool. soak the steel in mineral spirits and gently clean out the indentations with a soft bristle brush. a tooth brush works well.
steel wool removes the blue/parkerizing finish.
good luck with it. I love mine.

Re #18 Mike that's why I strongly stipulated the use of Stainless steel wool only I have used it on my 303's which I am pretty pedantic over, had I not witnessed it being done to a cruddy 303 magazine that the armourer had I would have dismissed the idea as stupid. It is really only for very light surface rust and general crud that a rifle may have collected over they years using light pressure no gorilla stuff and WD-40 or RP-7 just try it on a piece of cruddy blued parts/rifle you have lying around we all have a piece somewhere in the collection?
