I love it when you guys write about your childhoods.
I looked at a Ruger AR piston. Horrible design. I have Adams,SIG,and LWRCI pistons. All good designs.
I have an Olympic 9mm Glock fed AR. Great gun! One week after the oly drop dead date, my extractor broke. So now i am on my spare. I wonder if Numrich bought their parts?

I like direct impingement in the AR as originally designed by Gene Stoner. I know folks like the piston design but it entails more moving parts and my opinion is that it doesn't really improve anything. I will say that I fired an HK416 extensively several years ago and they definitely run cooler but that's about it.

Olympic Arms
Olympic Arms is still open as of yesterday, 5-23-17. I was up there about a problem with a 22lr conversion that they are selling. They are selling rifles, pistols, and acces. over the counter. Beware of the 22lr conversion they offer, a real piece of ---.

What's that one look like? Is it like the rest? Can we figure out what's wrong with it?

First off, I don't have a camera and wouldn't know how to post a picture if I did. The unit I got looks kinda like the bolt carrier group that comes out of the AR15. You just open the action and remove the bolt carrier group and insert the conversion unit. Its that simple. The unit I got is composed of 3 parts. The front part looks like a 223 cartridge with a hole through the center. It fills the chamber area in the barrel. The middle part is the sliding bolt with the fire pin and extractor. It has a recoil spring attached to the top of it. The rear part in stationary and has an arm that the bolt slides back and forth on. It also has the other end of the recoil spring attached to it.
The first problem I have with mine is that the firing pin won't hit the cartridge rim with enough force to reliably fire the rounds. The few rounds that do fire have a very, very light indentation on the rim, way to light. The rounds that don't fire have the same indentation but it just isn't enough to fire them. I took it back and they examined it and said it was just fine, just as designed and built to spec. At first they blamed my rifle and I produced it and it was okay. Next they suggested that I had an unauthorized trigger job which it does not. They next blamed the ammo I was using and went into a lecture on headspace. I was told that ammo by Win., Rem., and CCI would work but that ammo by Fed. would not work. I guess he forgot that I had already told him that I had tested ammo by those companies and that they didn't work. That was the extent of the help I got on that trip.
A few days later I returned to complain about a magazine I had gotten. Initially I got 3 magazines that are advertised as holding 20 rounds. Guaranteed to hold 20 but sometimes hold up to 27. I wasn't concerned about them holding less rounds but one of them wouldn't lock into the gun. He agreed it was bad and gave me another one. It wouldn't lock in either, at least with the bolt closed. It was all they had to offer me so that's how I ended up. Still playing with it trying to get it to work.

So, I went and looked at their site so I was familiar with your rig... The mag not locking in when loaded wouldn't worry me much, I have a CMMG kit and use the hold open so there's no issue with the first round loading or getting fetched up when cocking it by hand. Different mag manufacturers could be tried too... Did you have your rifle on hand when you went to them? They should have been able to take your rifle and function it flawlessly to SHOW you it worked OK. Otherwise it's conjecture... I wonder if it's parkerizing that's keeping things from working smoothly? I had a CMMG that was parkerized black and wouldn't function well until I scrubbed the parkerizing off the moving parts until they were silver, you could try that? I later got the stainless CMMG kit and it works perfectly in comparison. I'd love to be close enough to trouble shoot this, once it's working correctly you'll love sub cals in AR...
Is this the kit you have...?

That is different from the conversion I got. With mine, the bolt hold open does not work when the conversion is installed. The forward assist is also inoperative with the conversion installed. I did have my rifle with me on the times that I went there. The forward assist I'm not concerned about. The bolt hold open would not be a problem if the mag would lock in on a closed bolt. I can maybe fix that in time.

Those are both extras from CMMG. I have 27 rd mags too and only load 25 to make it easier for loading.

Yes, I see that, I was wondering why they didn't simply take it and prove to you it functioned instead of passing you all that gas about your rifle being the problem. Well, perhaps try removing the black finish from sliding parts and see if that helps function, and oil before shooting. The mag thing should be aided by loading less rounds to start. I had 13 mags at the time so a few less rounds to start didn't matter. Also I found that after about 6-8 mags it was ready for a bit of cleaning... Before that it would run great...(the stainless one) I still want to help you get this one running...
