1916 Aldis Scope - Focus Ring Screw & Elevation Dial Screw

I would give it a try and remove the elevation dialer with the engraving up to 200 .. I had seen original ones placed upside down and having a new engraving. Probably the original military engraving is still present on the other side.

Edit: Roger, Austrian M.95 scope rings were not only soldered, but also always with a pin secured in place too.

Fantastic info... thank so much!! Looks like I picked up an interesting pair being one Purdey and one H&H. Kind of glad it worked out that way. I now wonder what's under that added ring on the H&H?

I tried removing the elevation dial to see if the original markings were on the other side and while the screw came right off, the dial itself lifted up a little bit but then didn't want to come off any further and I didn't want to force it off and risk breaking something. Any ideas why it doesn't want to come fully off?

Roger... have a great trip and definitely count me in for one of those Aldis range drum locking screws when you friend makes up some more. Any chance he can also make the focus ring screws?

Got the elevation dial off on the second try... no markings on the other side.

Too bad there were no markings on the opposite side, but it was worth the try! And your scopes are definately interesting, at least to me!

Can I just step in here with a suggestion hattrick? Might I suggest that you do not under any circumstances strip these telescopes any further. And never, ever, never touch the lenses with anything more than a fine camera lens blower type brush or acid free kitchen tissue (usually the cheapest type) rolled onto an ear bud dipped in clean methylated spirit. I appreciate that the real experts will tell you how simple they are internally. But just be warned, there is no such thing as spare parts and a single lens will have to be mathematically formulated/calculated and ground and will cost a kings ransom. Alas, they only come as matched pairs

Don't worry Peter I wasn't planning on taking it apart. The lenses are very clean and all parts function properly so no need right now. If I get some mounts then that certainly changes things.

As for the Purdey scope.. bummer about that elevation dial not having the markings on the other side. On a plus note, it is marked with a "0" over "Rifle 461" in the same font as Promo's example on the tube.
