.............and that my friends, is why we should be prepared to pay the big bucks for a rifle.
While ever we expect to get them for a pittance, they will always part out to get more money.

I did buy a complete set of nearly new woodwork for a No4 rifle at a militaria show recently at a cost of just £20 for the set. It looks like a post war replacement set that hasn't been long on a rifle. Someone then removed the wood from the rifle and applied a really dark stain to the wood. I wiped multiple cloths soaked in mentholated spirits over it to remove some of the stain and when dry I applied a generous amount of raw linseed oilicon, wiping off the excess after a couple of hours or so. The natural colour and texture of the wood has come up lovely now and looks a million dollars, well worth my £20. The top hand guards were not brilliant but at the price that this set costs who cares?

Wonder what I would get for my MKIII Teak set of furniture thats on my 1945 Lithgowicon as I swapped it for the original set and put that set away.
That knot on the left side has not moved or done anything in the last 12 years that I have had it and used it for club shoots

I have bought two or three SMLE rear sight guards that have either NOT fitted or taken far too much work to fit. It is the one piece that I think someone would make money on if they re manufactured GOOD parts. I invested in a set of No4 woodwork a while ago and am hanging on to it. I agree that breaking up rifles that are useable is a sin but am considering breaking an SMLE as it is Deactivated and I bought it as part of a job lot to sell. It had no DA cert so I went to the proof house and shelled out more money for a new cert. Unfortunately I was in and out of hospital and missed a number of Trade Shows. Now due to a change of deactivation specifications and law I cannot sell it or give it away as it is 'defectively deactivated' and requires more expenditure on having the work done and getting another certificate, the third this rifle will have had. The proof house must be making a fortune but I'm not. The rifle owes me £200 UKicon pounds / $250 US / $325 AUS / $325 CAN so it looks like I'd better study ebay and think about it.

PS. Cinders that is a VERY nice rifle.

That's a brass band on it? Haven't seen one of those for a bit. The teak would be lovely too...

Insofar as the No1, No4 and 5 handguards are concerned, a lot of the blame (if that's the right word) for the shortage might go to the target and civilian shooters in the past. Unlike the Armourers in the past, the civvy shooters didn't bother to repair a broken or cracked handguard whereas we did in the Army especially when there were 'dues-out'. They are a relatively easy fix too. Usually just a couple of good slip patches, leave them a bit proud internally for strength, glued in with hot animal glue or aero strength/approved adhesive and make good. Even the broken or cracked ears (No1) are a simple fix. Not that I have done many (but certainly 30 or so.....) but in NZicon and in the Ord tech. stores at Bandiana, they had a jig that was used for cutting and holding the handguard while being repaired.

Just repair what's there I say. I know the purists might not like it. But those that know do.......

Robert, you have till the end of the month or is it the 2nd May? to get rid of unwanted defective deacts etc !!!!! (thats the way I read it)
I placed an advert in the buy or sell part of the forum for a Sten Mk111 (old or mid spec) have a Mk 5 to trade, I can only guess the dealers will hoping for a mad rush otherwise they will be reducing the prices to break even or wait it out till we leave the EU, as its worded they can be sold, traded to a None EU member......

But in all honesty I can't see the dodgy car park deals coming to a halt......but if anyone proceeds with this unlawful practice be warned, it will carry the possibility of a 5 year stretch, It will be interesting to read about the first arrest regarding a trade in defective deactivated firearms.........

I must admit I never thought in a Million years I'd be writing about a defective deactivated firearm, but there you go............ anyone know where I can get a Green card for the US ?

If I understood one dealer correctly there could be a possibility that E.U. deac rules/laws may/could be amended/changed in the summer but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I think there is more chance of finding the Holy Grail..... , I've heard all kinds from dealers either they can't read or have a problem excepting the fact that some of there stock at the end of the month is worth peanuts......
