A day out with the Sniper rifles

Guest day last Sat at Bisley - 600 yards and an opportunity to let my nephew shoot some of my sniper rifles. The P14(T) behaved itself as usual and was bang on the money at 600. Next up was my 1916 Enfield No.1 MkIII* with Periscopic Prism Co. scope. Never shot it at 600 yard before but it shot very close to the 600 yard setting. Then my first ever sniper rifle purchased in 1987 - an all matching No4(T) with No.32 Mk3 scope - again bang on the money. Then my Swede m41B shooting the awesome 6.5x55, this one made in 1941 - a 0.75 MOA rifle. We did shoot my L42A1 with trial bracket to mount a S&B 6x42 scope as trialed by the SBS & SAS but for some reason I didn't take a picture! Lastly my Parker Hale M85 - a very comfortable rifle which beat the L96A1 for accuracy in the trials. Rain stopped play for a bit but with a 30 minute window before shooting stopped the sun came out. I decided to give the SMLE PPCo one last shot. The wind was blowing a bit so I used the right hand edge of the post reticule against the left hand 9 o'clock edge of the current round bull Target Rifle target (39 inch aiming mark and 6.3 inch V-Bull). This rifle/scope combination shoots 2 inches to the right of the point of aim. Given that the point of the reticule was about 4 inches clear of the edge of the black it was about a 4 minute wind. I tie an old shell dressing to the butt using one of the pockets from a cut down canvas 5 pocket bandolier so that I can get a cheek weld. It is possible to shoot with the left eye but I find it very slow and uncomfortable. I fired one shot which resulted in a dead centre V-Bull. A great way to end the day and proof that you wouldn't want to be on the sharp end of one of these old WW1 sniper rifles. I hope my nephew remembers this day for a long time.
