I usually shoot 3 comps per year down at Bisley with the HBSA. They are the Fixed Bayonet Comp, The "1910", short range, and the Annual Mid Range Comp. Because of work, I'll usually miss at least one. For those I use a MkII Martini, SMLE MkIII*, SMLE MkV, Remington P14, No4 Mk1/2, an L39 and a No5.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Sadly Bindi it is a very rare occasion we are allowed to fully charge our mags + 1, we have to give a sporting chance to the guys with the Mausers, Swedes & K-31s, Carcano's (no one shoots the last one competitively in the club) as they are only 5 & 6 shot mag capacities anyhow!
So you have no choice but to pile 5 rounds into an empty mag its about the only time having gorilla hands like mine is a bonus...........

Political correctness running wild. 10 shot shoots the way to go equal reloads.

Shoot my Lithy No 1, LB No 4 and BSA No 5 once a month in Service Rifle Comps down in Victoria although lately I have been favouring my M38 Swede as it's such an accurate bugger to shoot. 5 round mag is plenty as you have plenty of time in the timed Service matches.

Plus the 03A3 gets a run along with the 24/30, FR8 and K98icon Mausers.

We have a series of informal high power matches at my local range. I shoot 2 of my No. 4s and a pal occationally shoots a No.1 MkIII* I worked up for him. 200 yrd matches. CMPicon, Old Soldiers (rifles not just shooters), and a few fun shoots after the main matches. The occasional LE pops up here and there besides mine.

I belong to the State Military Rifle Club, so the sight of No 1 Mk III's is a fairly common thing at our comp shoots. In fairness, the majority of .303 shooters will choose their No 4's over the No 1s, but that's not to say all the time in every case. Nothing Like seeing a No 1 being cycled much quicker through a rapid fire serial when stacked up against the other bolt actions.

The threads above discuss a very relevant point, charger and mag loading. The amount of malfunctions are surprising. Never less than one .303 with a feed problem per serial. The issue is usually the spring tension (or lack of) and we have fare fewer No 4 spares available than No 1 (home made Lithgowicon) spares, contributing to the problem.

Rim overs, from both experienced and inexperienced shooters mis-loading their chargers, are a common issue. The 'rimless guys' have a chuckle with their 5 round stripepr clips at that point...

The extended "Mauser period" in target appearances can be argued either way - too PC or just a concession that works well for both parties. I can't take sides, as I'll happily shoot a Lee Enfield, Springfield or Mauser.
Trying to save Service history, one rifle at a time...

We load 10 rounds & give a "Mauser Break" for those that need it.
Then again,we don't play for sheep stations.

In Franceicon we have to load 5 rounds then another 5 inside the time limit. I believe this is to give an even playing field. But to be honest there's plenty of time for shooting the 10 round's; even if you were loading one at a time!
as for the charger's; I use WWII spec ones. They work great. I have a bag full of late production ones that I bought online; total rubbish; They actually scratch the cases they are so tight. Just scrap really; unless you want to spend time with a dremel.

I shoot my No.4 in increasingly formal competitions. I've just shot the NRA Falling Plates and the Methuen Cup - top tip, did you know that a UKicon Figure 12 target is near-as-dammit the same width as the foresight blade at 300yds?

The thing I really like is teaching fellow young(ish!) shooters to shoot well with the Enfield. Unfortunately Shoot to Live only covers the prone position and the 1947 Pam 3's guide to other positions seems to have been chosen to look neat rather than be any practical use...

Our Service Matches are compsed as follows:

300 Metres 5 rounds lying unsupported (prone)

200 Metres 5 rounds lying unsupported and 5 rounds kneeling or sitting unsupported

100 Metres 5 rounds lying unsupported, 5 rounds kneeling or sitting unsupported and 5 rounds standing unsupported.

I can;t remeber the timings but needless to say the 5 round boys have sufficient time,

    Dick
