    Longbranch AL serial#

Recently examine a No4 MkI* Longbranch with Longbranch number erased and an AL prefix number added which I believe is a BSA #.
Would there be a reason for this?

If there is a four digit number after the AL your rifle could have had its serial number transposed with a BSA at some point, but I have also seen AL (& other letter combinations were used as well) applied to weapons in Indian service. However, the ones I've seen bore the 'AL number' as well as the original rifle serial number. The very first rifle I ever owned, when I was 17, was an Enfield 1918 SMLE Mk3* & as well as its serial on the receiver ring it also bore 'AL18299' on the left side of the butt socket, below the safety banjo spring.

AL+serial number is also possible for Weapons used im Luxembourg after WWII. I have a Webley Mk. VI used in Luxembourg with such marks.
