Help with 1898 LE I tang markings needed

Typical cavalry/mounted troops markings used go...15th Mounted Rifles, D squadron, trooper 10 or something pretty close. Sadly, there was no 15th Mounted Rifles (that I can find anyway), and that doesn't account for the '78'. Still a mystery I'm afraid. Imperial units often had their own marking regs and conventions.

I would guess the 78 is a rack number or id number for the rifle.

The District 10, Manitoba Rangers seems pretty close any ideas on the 15??

I just don't think this rifle was ours. That link shows the progression of that unit anyway.

"Concise Lineages of the Canadian Army 1855-Date"
Manitoba Regt and Manitoba Rangers formed Mar 1920, outside of the LLE era in Canada. LLE in Cdn service were usually stamped with M&D on buttstock. I am sure it is not Canadian.

Perhaps some clearer shots of the left cheek with all the stampings relating to upgrades or repairs might help with the history of this rifle. To me it looks like it had a long life in British service. Also curious that it has a Lee Metford Mk II bolt (I think) and rather unclear markings on the right cheek. The date is unusually fuzzy and the "LE" almost seems to have been intentionally defaced?

I will get better pictures of the left cheek and inspect the butt again for marks.
