SRS Check 1898 Krag

Hello, all!

I recently purchased an 1898 for a very good deal, and I am looking for any available information on it. I have read about SRS, and I'm hoping that there might be some details there!

The serial number of the rifle is: 118749. It appears to be in good condition. Either way, I'm sure it is worth more than I paid for it.

I'm not opposed to selling it. If I hold onto it, it'll just sit in my safe. I'd rather it go to someone that would appreciate the thing.

I've done a bit of light cleaning to remove the grease, but I've been told to not aggressively clean it. Do you have any idea what something like this would be worth? I don't really have any use for it and picked it up as a collector's piece.

Nice looking rifle, looks like it needs a bit of cleaning, old oil has dried to yellow. The butt looks to have been sanded and is down below the wood/metal line. Still, it looks to be all there and if the bore is good, it's a good one... There'll be others along that live in the US and can give relative prices. I'm Canadian so prices here are different.

I recognize Garber456's Krag, #118749, from a post by 'CDP311' on the Krag Collector Association forum.

I informed him of the SRS 'hit', and gave suggestions on minimal cleaning, in a response posted on the KCA forum.

IMHO - This Krag would be worth around $650 to $725 USD, if in 'Safe Firing Condition'. The butt-plate area of the Stock has been heavily sanded and there is a bad gouge in the wood. The SRS mention is interesting, but, it is hard to access how that effects value.

I am concerned about the condition of the bore and especially the chamber. It may be an illusion from heavy storage grease, but, the chamber appears to have 'rough chatter marks'.

FWIW - There are some Krags in circulation that had their chambers crudely altered by VFW Posts to accept .30-06 Blanks. If this has happened to the OP's Krag, it would no longer be safe with .30-40 ammo. This rifle could easily be checked, by proper bore cleaning, to insure the bore and chamber are safe to fire.

CPD311 is also me, you are correct. No disrespect was intended, but I did want to gather as much information about the rifle from as many places as I possibly could to ensure it was accurate. I do appreciate the help, and I took your advice as far as giving the rifle a light cleaning and removed most of the caked on grease.

To my untrained eye, the bore appears to be in good condition. I will, however, be taking it to a competent gunsmith to give her a once over today.

FYI, fellas, this (now displaced to Missouri) Kentuckian is now in possession of this Krag. I am currently hunting for a take-off barrel on the ol' eBay -- cause BOY is that chamber drilled out!! With a drill so large I'm worried it may have hit the receiver a bit -- definitely not for a 30-06 blank!
There's a bit of a crack in the stock that needs some attention and, sadly, also the handguard (that one's my fault ).
So anyway, I'm going to document the process of making an action wrench and replacing the barrel and repairing the stock and all that. I'll post it all once I'm done...if it turns out OK

Regardless, I'm happy to have this Kentucky rifle even if I can't ever shoot it! How's that SRS thing work? Can I get more information from them than just what BAR posted?
