Shipping a pistol

I have a pistol that I have to ship back for warranty work, who should I use?

Usually for warranty work, the manufacturer will send a shipping label (UPS or FedEx) and pay the shipping costs both ways. Failing that, I would have the store where you bought it send it back by mail (USPS), which an FFL dealer can do. The cost is a lot less and a dealer won't have any hassle.

But, failing the above, your only options are:

1) UPS Next Day Air or Next Day Airsaver, or
2) Fedex Priority Overnight

You must ship from a company customer counter, not a Kinkos, not a UPS Store, not a drop box. You must notify the carrier that your package contains a firearm. Nothing on the package (including the name of the recipient) can identify the contents as a firearm.

The previous is correct but you'll need an FFL to receive it on the return post.

Ummm.... No, you don't. If you ship a gun to the manufacturer for repair, the manufacturer can ship it directly back to you without going through an FFL. Check the current ATF book. There is a question & answer specifically about that scenario.

Agree, I took a pistol that needed warranty work to the dealer I bought it from and the factory shipped the repaired gun back to me.

If your pistol is one of the Rugers being recalled, call the Ruger recall hotline 1-800-784-3701 . I just recieved my LCP back from them. They sent me a box pre-paid shipping UPS overnite, It arrived at my front door a week later. Someone must be home to sign for it. You can send a pistol back to the manufacturer for repair and have it returned to your home without a FFl. Even in lefty land New York. Tom

Doesn't have to go to a manufacturer. A private citizen can ship a firearm to a gunsmith for repair/custom work and have it returned direct to the consumer.
