    41 marked barrel

Most of my Garands have been rebuilt with barrels from the early 50s. I do have one 412 thousand Springfield Armory receiver that has a barrel dated 8-41, if I am reading it right. The barrel is marked:

    S-A 8-41 C U
It also has a P stamped on the barrel in front of the step-down and I can see a couple of "punch marks" on each side of the step-down that I presume had something to do with hardness testing.

Could this barrel have originally belonged to this receiver? I just can't help but be curious.

Possible, but fairly unlikely. The rifle was made mid-December 1941. Parts overlap, particularly barrels, particularly at that point in production wasn't more than a couple months, usually a LOT less...a couple of weeks, ahead of receiver production. Given the odds, it's unlikely that an August 1941 barrel is original to the receiver made 4-5 months later....though stranger things have happened!

    Thanks John,
I'm sure you are right. The rifle didn't have an electric pencil marking on the bottom/side of the receiver and I thought the barrel might be original to the receiver,,,,,,,,but 68 years would have been a long time for them to stay together!

    Thanks again
    Paul

    You never know

About ten years ago I made a data sheet for a friend who wanted to sell his Britishicon proofed M1icon (the proof was on the barrel between the gas cylinder )

The serial number was 544121 all original, type 1 lockbar, 20% finish still left on the gas cylinder, -12SA bolt heat lot RE5B etc. The barrel was dated
S-A 10-41 D35448-7 REP 33A and the gas port was chromed. The chamber was bright and the TE was 1.0. My friend had bought this rifle at Kleins Sporting Goods in 1964, I do not remember him shooting this M1 as he was into the Lee Enfields.

I checked the barrel for any sign of a installation there wasn't any sign.

    RCS,

Not at all surprising. There are plenty of examples like that. Was going to comment on the above posts but declined.............

8-41 SA barrels markings are upside down, when originally installed. I have 2 in the 300K range, and 1 [1-42] in the 500K range, all 3 are upside down. Andy
