Recently picked up a 1941 Maltby No4 Mk1. This is my first wartime Enfield, own a few no1's, a pair of LB mk1*'s, one No5 and a nice mk2 Faz.
Looks like unfortunately this one isn't in original condition, the rear sight and magazine are both post war Fazakerley from as far as I can tell. Looks like the rear doesnt sit flush either, considering swapping that for an L type 2 position rear as that would be more correct as I understand. There is also a good amount of markings where a B is marked with an overlapping L, and a mix of different stock proofs. In two places on the receiver there is a "55" stamped which I find very curious.
The brass buttplate doesnt sit flush with the stock and there is a very coarse finish to the butt. At first I thought it had been sanded but with how proud the proofs are it looks like it may have left the factory in that shape
As I mentioned this is my first wartime rifle and its markings and features are somewhat puzzling to me. I'm disappointed with the mismatched parts, but with so many early features like the sight ears, round cocking piece, and hinged forward band along with the very bright and crisp bore its certainly not invaluable.
If any of you could shed some light as to its current configuration, how it ended up with Faz parts (I'm suspected that occurred after it left British hands) or what the various proofs signify I'd appreciate it. Cheers!
