Mottled heaven!

This is worth its own thread. I had the pistol gripalready, the handguards I got on ebay for $24 delivered, and the Type D stock there also for $45 delivered. The stock had been painted black, but I could see the pattern underneath, so 30 minutes with paint stripper was all I needed.

End result - using my 601 build to show it off. My 601 just might be a late 601 or an early 602 now! This is about the nicest set of early mottled early furniture I have ever had. BTW, the stock was a B*TCH to get on. It may stay there.

I do not recall ever seeing the pattern in your photos, must be very early ?

When they switched from brown to black, at first they used the same process, but a black dye instead. I believe the mottle black is the earliest of the Type D stocks. Later triangular handguards were made like the later pistol grips. I don't think they used the same fiberglass process in later A1 handguards.

I have never had a set this early and this mottled. It is almost as sexy as the brown furniture you have, but not quite.

I would also think that the early or first production Colt magazines could also be used ?

The first type had the small CAL..223 stamp and the magazine body only had the number 1 in a circle. Second type was the same only a larger size CAL..223 markingAttachment 90548Attachment 90549Attachment 90550

Nice looking early furniture. Wish I had my set of brown fibrite back...but I'd still sell it anyway I'm sure... Nice looking rifle now.
