Can anyone identify this object and give me a reliable source of information?

I believe that is similar to the artillery simulators we used back in the 60's in the Marine Corps.
In the last pictures, showing the top of the unit, you are missing a red plastic screw cap. A high octane gasoline is poured into the simulator and the red screw then seals it up. The small hole in the bottom is where you would slide a electric squib, blasting cap, into and hold it in place with tape. Some of these would simply be buried while others would be placed in a larger tube for directional purposes. Hope this helps.

The object is made from bakelite or some kind of plastic. Maybe these extra pictures can help? If you guys need more pictures, just ask.

Your right, it was made of bakelite because they needed something with a high chemical and electrical resistance. That hollow center is where the explosive was stored. Don't remember what type but I do remember it made one hell of a bang.

I just can't seem to find a source of information about artillery simulators online. A member from another forum thinks it's a 2 inch practice mortar bomb. I really don't know what it is...

Go to this site...uxoinfo.com. Once there, look on the right side and click on " mulvaney's database ". When that screen comes up, go down a short distance and you'll see "simulator flash artillery m110 ". Those were the ones we used and it looks much like yours. There are plenty more simulators on that page so get comfortable and check them all out. The one you have is most likely listed. Best of luck.
