My photos show the early Winchester 224E2 cartridge designed for the Winchester Lightweight Rifle and the 222 Remington Special which later became the 223/5,56mm.

The Winchester cartridge could be fired in the AR-15 but the 222 Remington Special could not be fired in the Winchester. There are other variations of these early test cartridges tooAttachment 95774Attachment 95775Attachment 95776

I always thought the Winchester Lightweight Rifle was a nifty looking thing. It would be neat to mock up a Mini-14 to look like one. I think one could get that to look pretty close.

On page 305 of the book "The Black rifle" there is a photo of a CoAttachment 95788lt Model 01 AR-15 rifle that was re-barreled at Enfield Arsenal to 4,85x49mm for testing.

my question, the 4,85mm is longer than the 5,56mm - was a different bullet used or was the rifle also modified ?

The 4.85 round is somewhat longer than the 5.56, as can be clearly seen in the photo in RCS' post.

The photo on page 305 of "The Black Rifle" shows a basic M-16 but with "4.85" painted on the hand-guard.

It had to be "single shot" because there is no way the 4.85 round would fit in the standard magazine, or a suitable magazine would fit in a standard M-16 lower.
