I thought at one point we had uncovered that the men here were Marine Raiders in the early days...thus the painted cam on helmets.

I wondered if they might have belonged to the 82nd Airborne Div? They had painted camo on their helmets in Sicily and Italy in 1943. But the rest of the gear doesn't look quite right.
They could be airborne a couple of them have trousers that look the part, but I don't think they are Marines--none of the gear looks stolen LOL,
M3 knife, shoulder holster (.45?). Not your average infantry weapons. Maybe they are Airborne?
