Another Snider Enfield

Got another SE today. This one is kind of different.
Brass barrel bands, its about the length of a short rifle, but no bayo lug. It is rifled.
It has no rear sight, and it looks as though it was never meant to have a sight(?)
Lock is marked 1868, and there is a number 4 stamped on it.
Two stars and a 'II'...Mk2?
I believe the stock may be repro.

It looks to me like it had a rear sight...and I had one that had a bayonet lug cut off badly so I polished the spot until nothing remained of the original. That one doesn't look like that was done this century though, or the last one...

I believe this Snider barrel has be shortened from a "3-band rifle".

The front sight is mounted backwards. This would also explain the lack of a short rifle bayonet lug. There appears to be a rectangular area where the rear-sight base was soldered to the barrel.

The Brass barrel-bands and stock may be from European model 1853 Enfield muzzle-loading reproduction.

I imagine original bands would be steel!

My hunch is that your barrel has three rifling grooves instead of five.

p.s. A Snider-Enfield lock-plate should be flush with the wood. Your's is standing "proud".

Yep, forgot to mention the front sight. It is indeed on backwards.
I had suspected this was once a long rifle. It is three groove.
