    Aldis scope

I noticed today a Listing for an Aldis on eBay UKicon: WW1 Aldis Pattern No.3 Sniper Scope for SMLE .303 | eBay

Do I see it right that this Aldis was originally on a H&H mount since it has the rifle markings on the scope tube (compared to the Purdey which had the rifle markings on the scope ring)? Seller also claims it is a 3rd Pattern Aldis scope, while I'm not an expert this looks more to be one of the earlier made scopes. So were the first ones made already 3rd Pattern?

On the Purdey examples I have it is only the company name which is engraved onto the ring and the rifle serial number is engraved on the tube.

The only real way to determine which mounts were originally installed is by the spacing of the rings and seller (who posts on here) believes it to be from a Purdey rifle.

    Cheers,

    Simon.

P.S. Yes it is 3rd Pattern. Following the introduction of the 4th Pattern some 3rd were retro-fitted with a prism cell.

Can't tell you what it's original purpose was, but have seen one or two pop up on eBay over the years.

    What is the reticule design?

Here's another one that was on eBay years ago. I thought I had photos of a second, but can't find them at the moment. The "artillery sight" title on the photo was just how I chose to describe it.

How is the focus ring attached or connected, can you tell?

    Just a simple crosshair reticule?

Aldis were still around till the early 60s, so if it has no acceptance or inspection marks, it could even be from a civilian application.

The bright metal parts on the tube are someone's attempt to make a mount, similar to what is on your tube.

smerdon42, it would had been better if you opened a new thread for your scope, rather then resurrecting an old thread from 2019 on an eBay auction. It seems at least Jim was a bit confused by this as well.

Also, I'm not really sure what you want to know. You post pictures of two items and a question on a single item. The item in the front is a PPCo 1918 scope for the P.14 sniper rifle. You however might question what the Aldis marked item in the back is. I honestly don't know, but I don't think it is intended for a rifle. The whole thing seems to originally would be permanent affixed to a certain item and is not adjustable. So it might originally had belonged to a "larger item", such as maybe artillery.
