Neutering an L1A1 and a FAL.

I understand that in Britainicon some people still use SLR's by firing them and straight pull single action rifles. What is needed to do this? is it simply removing the operating rod, or are there several steps involved here?

Forgive my daft question please I live in California.

Hi Newcastle, a bit of background...

In 1987 a certain deranged individual by the name of Michael Ryan went on a sickening murderous rampage.

The net result of this was a typical political gun grab (the 1988 amendment to the firearms act) and the banning of semi-automatic long Firearms (anything chambered for centerfire ammo), effectively leaving us with .22 LR and WMR rimfire semi autos.

All our Fal variants got the chop....

12 years later, we saw the first of a new breed, the straight pull Fal.

Made new by Imbel, these guns were manufactured as per the US civilian spec rifles, lacking the safety (auto) sear.
with the addition of an un-ported barrel.

Going forward another 10 years and the first of the SP L1A1's appeared.

Assembled in Europe and marketed by Anglo Custom Rifles, these used original receivers and TMH's, using modified bolts, bolt carriers, deleted auto Sears, barrel without port and deactivated gas blocks.

These were followed by another company, Suffolk Rifles, who took a slightly different approach, original Receivers and TMH'S again with barrels lacking ports, gas blocks with welded ports and an angle cut into the top of the bolt carrier, this would have the effect of making a piston run over the top of the carrier, should somone attempt to make the rifle semi-automatic.

There have been others, with various degrees of success over the years..

All using variations of the above modifications.

I have a couple of Suffolk Rifles builds, one built using my own supplied kit.

Not perfect, but a pleasure to still own and shoot.

Ah so its not something I can do myself with the option of changing back should zombies rise or a high degree of dangerous civil disorder occurring (which round here means a significant Seismic event which removes both food/ water supplies and also the restraining influence of law and order influence for upwards of 96 hours).

    Thank you

Your welcome. May I ask why you considered it, are the Fal family in danger in the People's Republic of California?

You could just invert the Gas plug, wait for a rainy day and enjoy the thrills and spills of UKicon shooting!

You can just shut the gas off by turning the gas plug upside down as I recall(done to launch rifle grenades), but I very much doubt that'd be enough for CA law. Probably needs to be welded in for that.
"...the FAL family in danger..." The Rifle is in danger everywhere. Far too scary for politicians. Our idiot government chopped literally thousands of brand new in the box C1A1's and C2's rather than sell 'em to anybody. Gunparts got any remaining parts.

You know how to make a grown man cry, I still harbour a crazy dream of building a C1A1 on an original Receiver and TMH to go with my Lithgowicon and Enfield inch patterns ....

More chance of finding the Holy Grail and filling it with Unicorn **** quite frankly !

Completely in danger here in CA as they are "assault rifles" with detachable magazines and therefore have to either not be assault rifles (ie i change some specs up) or they had to be registered last year. I have actually changed mine to fixed magazine to avoid registering them but I quite liked the idea of a bolt action rifle with the option for a quick change to as designed if ever needed.

Unfortunately Newcastle, if California went the ban route, I guess they would go the same way as Canadaicon and ban them, straight pull or not....

I sincerely hope not, but I don't fancy your chances when the natural flow of public opinion goes back to the democrats on a federal level.

It's just the way it goes, flows one way, then the other eventually....

Well, we still have groups that own them serviceable and F/A. They're special groups that can't be joined but can buy and sell among themselves. They have to keep them at home though. The F/A guys used to have a once a year outing but I believe that's over and gone. The average guy, under my age can't have a FA because he wasn't around then and the others were corralled in '98 I think it was. Anywayzzz...
    Regards, Jim
