New to Enfields, What is This Cross Screw?

I have a sporterized No. 4 Mk. 1* with a cutoff stock and it has a screw running through the stock from left to right, in front of the trigger guard. It does not seem to pass through anything other than the wood. What is this for? Would it be correct for this model?
