Returning a rifle to how it came from the factory is in fact a BUBBA job. The military repaired , upgraded rifles all the way until they were sold out of service. The original rifle may have had a mix of manufacturers parts or hand fitted parts. You just don't know. Don't assume.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. It's almost as if I am trying to figure out the history of the handguards and what might have happened to the rifle by being here....

It may not be the case here, but worth checking before you dig out the filler!
Outside of the filled rivets the rest seems to be in order and standard.

Then they were filled by someone outside the military that didn't like the look.

Understood. I will revert it back to its original military design. I have been searching photos trying to find any handguards with them filled but no luck yet.

An additional note as well, the front hand guard is stamped with a "F" and the rear is a "TS" and a feint broad arrow.
