    M1917 Stamp/Stock Mark

I was looking at this stamp today and thought I would ask for any info someone could provide. I'm interested in finding out if this was applied when the rifle was sold off, changed hands or how it got there.
My search ability/memory is weak so I posted.
It's from an all Eddystone marked rifle #588968 parked with a 4-18 barrel.
    Thanks
