British Mine Detector post WW2

I picked up this British mine detector at a militaria fair a couple of years ago because it looked interesting and it was reasonably priced. I don't really know much about it other than it's British and post WW2. I have no idea if it is in working order or not. It seems like a heavy thing to hold for any length of time.
