Sure looks like the remnants of a vertical SG.
Looks to be pretty much the same spot the other 2 I've seen were stamped. Just dusted away from being blasted.
Finish color: Not so much the sides but when looking at the OP's bottom view of the housing it really shows that 'Over Seas' Blued Plum/Purple color like we see on many of the Imports.
I was trying to see what Deldriver was describing with the milling circle for the trigger/safety area but couldn't really tell. I know enough to know if he states so... there is one, but even with TenOC's pics I still couldn't catch it. Did notice in Ten's pics that the far right housing has been modified with the right magwall cut away. Nice to have side x side views to compare inside...... Thx Ten!
When looking at the Outer Sides of a SG type III it closely resembles a Inland Type III.
Of course a different worker/miller/ shift etc can show differences on the same make parts.
Was just looking at Stan Pro Housings on Auction, same types, but see differences.
Look at the difference in the location of the extra depth cut inside the middle one-
USGIBOB,
Poured the rain here last night and all day. Outside chores had to wait. Good day for my book and the race. I can see why some were getting Flipped off
I still prefer the Super speedways. Had to laugh when the pit crew member was dragged out of the stall and the team was penalized for 'Working' on the car outside the stall

Rynegold-Mitch,
I've been asking around and haven't found anyone that has seen the Serial number stamped on the front receiver ring.
I believe we could put this one in The Oddities Column.
Can you tell us the barrel maker?
And is it stamped with the usual DAVISONS GREENSBORO NC Stamp?
Interesting......

And I'll add that this is one of the best imported rifles I've ever owned. Look at the crown. And the finish is/looks up to arsenal standards.
Who do you suppose mfg. the front sight? it's unmarked. And would it have belonged on a Postal Meter? w/a Marlin barrel?
Regards, mitch

Mitch,
Thanks for following up on some of my questions.
So far just since your report we've seen 1 other carbine with the serial number stamped on the front receiver ring, pictured below. It's a Underwood found on a Auction site:
U.S. UNDERWOOD M-1 .30 CARBINE | HiBid Auctions
Your Front Sight with that shallow groove behind the sight blade is known to be made by Saginaw Steering Gear of Saginaw, MI. Known as SG. It's been replaced, they were not used by NPM.
NPM did use Marlin barrels in your serial # range. I have 2 NPM's near this one, only 1 that I shoot and it's probably my most accurate shooter carbine. NPM used barrels will have a stamped letter P on top of the barrel which is often under the bayonet style barrel band. We call it the NPM proof punch mark. Most any barrel they used will have a PUNCH MARK near that punch mark. Finding the mark tells us most often that that barrel is original to the receiver.
Example Pictured here:
Your Butt Plate has the Diagonal pattern of dimples, used only by Inland and Underwood.
Been so long since I compared them.... I'm not quite sure who it is right now.
Someone will help here.
Your metal finish looks great along with the muzzle and crown. I bet it will make a great shooter. Nice grained WRA stock also.
We have a Data Sheet that you could use to fill out and ID all your parts, the Types and Makers. Ask if your interested in a Data Sheet.
Let us know if you find the Punch Mark.
This link will show you markings I was researching on one of my NPM's receiver and barrel:

THanks Again Mitch, enjoy that Carbine. It was used by Israel, no better care takers of our GI Carbines IMO.

It looks like the finer diamond pattern: Underwood. What's the deal with the (2) holes, Charlie? - Bob
