    Talking Space gun ar/15

I couldn't help myself, I converted one of my Ar's to a space gun, I saw a picture and had to do it. I removed the stock and measured the tube then machined a clamp from 1.5" 7071 aluminum stock to adapt it to a 1" bar of 7071 aluminum rod. Then attached a slotted butt plate adapter to the rod and drilled a straight hole pattern on another .25" plate that attached to the butt plate. I put a hi-leverage lever on the clamp and slid it just forward enough to allow the charge handle to clear and on the back side of the clamp I put on 1" round foam for a cheek rest. Being as how it's a flat top, I machined a base for the original rear sight also out of 7071 and kept it to the original hight. It looks very cool and provides a lot of flexibility in terms of adjustment. I sure hope it shoots straight-SDH

The AR platform is flexible, and can be adapted in many different ways. I have a heavy 24" barrel with tubular handguard to go with a flat top upper, but haven't done anything with the butt.

You should give it a try, you can fit it exactly how you like to hold the gun and still keep it straight-SDH

I made a little change this afternoon and replaced the 1" aluminum rod with a piece of solid polished O-1 tool steel for balance. Later this week i'm going to make a dove tail slide for the butt-plate rather than the slot's I have there now. I figure if I'm going to get stupid about it, I may as well go for broke, BR-SDH

Are you going to park the rod so it'll match the anodized Al?

I was thinking about a quench black finish, but, I'm still not to sure. The park I use is U.S. Milspec stuff and it looks a little green/gray when applied. Sometimes I run bluing over the park and it darkens it, but, it just doesn't look as cool as the black stuff. You got me thinking now, hum. BR-SDH

I guess you could always duracoat it too, though it won't hold up if there's alot of friction wear like, for example, on a bolt carrier.
