    O.T.,kind of....,sort of....,yeah,it's gun related.

My pc is on it's last legs, making grinding noises, etc, old Toshiba Tecra 8000,win98,now here's my question, just bought a new one,Toshiba Satellite,Win.Vista SP1,160GB HD,2GB RAM,have a lot of data, text, pics, graphics to try and salvage from the Win98 system and load into Win.Vista, here's problem,Vista SP1 does not recognize Win98.,can't use Transfer Cable that works with other programs,so my question is,has anyone ever transfered files and etc. from an early Win.95/98 O.S. to the newer Win.Vista SP1 O.S.?,thought I read sometime back about a Win. Compatability Program that "tricks" the two sytems into believing they're related, anyone know anything of it?

What kind of files do you want to transfer? Your first priority now is to save any data, photo or personal files to a CD or DVD while you can.

I had the same problem and I bought a flash drive and downloaded what files I wanted to transfer from the old puter and just uploaded to the new puter. Worked for me. Flash drives are not expencive now.

Another way of doing it is to get a large Flash Drive (that little thingee that plugs into your USB port), copy and paste whole directories onto it, then take it over to your new computer, plug it into that USB port, copy and paste it there.

I got some 8 gig. Flash Drives on epay while back for practically nothing.

Also a great way to "back up" your data anyway. I periodically save important files and pics to one of the Flash Drives.

You can (or could!) download that conversion program from MS! Win98 has been "old news" for a LONG time, so it isn't included in the basic Vista software....a converter from XP and even 2000 is!

Rather than trying to "lap-link" your machines (a process that's about as antiquated as 98!), just dump your data on to a pen-drive and then move it that way via the emulation software.

Can't copy off old '98,don't write to cd's,only to a floppy and it would take a truck load of them,I'll go see whats up with flash drives(would like to save as much as possible before I lose it.

    Thanks all,

Your old lappy probably doesn't have a USB port, so you'll need an IDE-USB adapter. About 10 bucks! Once you got that, you should be able to dump the entire hard-drive on to a cheap 1 or 2 gig flash-drive.

    Old Win98 computer,

I have 1 usb port(for printer or anything),got a read only disk drive and a plug in external floppy drive,it's a 6GB lap top so I just bought a 8GB flash drive off Ebay, figured to copy whole hard drive(like was said) before I try anything, now for another question,as an example,I use Kodak software for camera,so what if Kodak software is win98 only and Vista won't recognize it?,do I need to go to Kodak site and download a Vista compatible version of Kodak software to load pics into?have several hundred pics to transfer. This is a whole new experince for me,I'm not into this hi-tech stuff so I learn as I go.

Forget the Kodak software for your pictures. Windos will open the photos and it will be better than the Kodak program. As long as the pictures on the old puter are JPG you are set to go.

Agree with Nubber entirely. Have seen the Kodak software and there are tons of better stuff out there, free too. Plus, practically every new PC now has some type of photo editing software. Ditto with most digital cameras you buy.

I have been using one that came with an older digital camera a few years ago, Photostudio. Is very much like Photoshop but simpler. Can hit one button and it automatically edits the photo.

It's way time for you to move into the 21st century. Then you will have more time for GUN stuff.
