When you see how the Japs fought for every square inch of these small islands, in the middle of the ocean, it gives a small indication of the nightmare that an invasion of mainland Japan would have been and how many allied lives it would have cost.
My father was en route. When the Japs abruptly surrendered, he became one of the first contingents of the occupation force instead of the invasion force. Although Truman was not one of my favorite Presidents, I bless him for dropping those bombs.
