Help Identifying (Pre-War?) Mauser

Grandfather brought it back from WWII. Hardly any markings besides proof marks. Was this converted to a sporter post-WWI? Caliber? Any thoughts/information appreciated. It had a full-length rib down the length of the barrel that was taken off as it was horribly bent and the rear-sight was missing.

No expert but the proofs, crown over N are civilian proofs, not military ones. Should also be 8mm. Experts should be along shortly.
