Newbie here, just found this forum, I was looking for some information about a rifle that was given to me, it belonged to my friends late Father..Rifle shoots great and very clean just don't know about the finish on barrelrd action..Thanks for any help..

Likely chrome plated for parade use. Stock looks to be in nice shape.
If I had that given to me, I might consider having the plating removed and getting it parkerized. You’d still be in it for less than it’s worth..and have plenty leftover to buy your friend a case or two of beer!

I picked up a late war eddystone that was chromed as well. Was going to have it stripped, but it kind of grew on me. Then I picked up a couple of chromed bayonets and that was that. I now look at it as being part of its history.

'Ricky' - It is what it is - Likely chromed for a veteran's organization. Leave it as it is for posterity.
Removing chrome is expensive and can compromise metallurgy.

Enjoy it and shoot in its present state. The sight areas can be "blackened" with sight-black spray, carbide or candle smoke, to improve sight picture.

I’d keep it as it is and shoot the heck out of it.
Still have to find one at an affordable price, damn...

Ricky, I agree with the others to leave as is. One thing I noticed though is, it looks like your trigger guard may not be nested properly into the stock. Sometimes the back of the magazine gets hung up on the receiver and does not seat properly. If you open the bolt and depress the follower you can sometimes see this. To fix remove the trigger guard and and make sure the back edge of the magazine fits up into the receiver. You may have to bend the trigger guard slightly to make it fit the contour of the stock in that area. Salt Flat

I saw that and wondered if it had just been sanded over zealously...?

Whoever had it chrome plated didn't do it for no reason. As has been suggested it was likely done for parade use.

Back in the 1970's a friend of the family use to display his collection of militaria items, to the public, at shows etc and one of the items that he had was a US M1 helmet which had been chrome plated and it had a mirror like finish to it. He could have got the chrome plating stripped off that helmet and returned it to a standard green painted finish but that would have been a shame because the public were all over that helmet, like bees round a honeypot, because it had a chrome finish.

You could display your Springfield, in your home, with a chrome-plated M1 helmet and that helmet could be obtained simply by chrome plating a standard M1 helmet.
