Makes me wonder how many more would have survived if a well scrimmed helmet cover had been general issue, and required wear.

I'm thinking it's just because it's colorized, when I first looked I thought re-enactors but don't think so. Everything in the pic now looks about new.

I think those are winter "Shoepacs"... Some of the US troops here can confirm...

I can just imagine, the rush of enemy troops who heard the "ping" of the empty clip hitting the ground: "What, you mean there were other rifles there too? Drats"
