Chinese SKS Red Wood stocks and handguards.

Red Wood vice Redwood. I was looking for information on Chinese SKS rifles and while doing that I found pictures of SKS rifles where the stocks were red. I first I just thought that the owner had stained the rifle stocks and handguards red. Then I found red handguards at both SARCO and Liberty Tree.

They seem to be Chinese, anyone know the story behind the red finish? Was this a commercial thing on the imported "sporter" rifles?

I have to say the SKS looks really nice dressed in red.

Dark reddish finish is what the Chinese used on the early Type56's, like the soviet guns. In the early 1960's they transitioned to a lighter, dull orange finish.

I would guess that that handguards in the advert aren't as red in real life as they are in the photo.

Is that your Type56 in the photo?

I only wish it was! no mine is a train wreck, I do have a beautiful Blade Bayonet Type 56 and two Russians that I bought Unfired NIB in the late 80's/early 90's for $79.00 each.

This is the one from Albaina you helped me with.

I was going to ask...so you're just going straight across with this wood? Then a rust blue, should look great after.

Hi Jim, Yeah.. I'm going to clean up the wood, leave the graffiti and rust blue rather then parkerize. I'll have to do a small repair on the handguard it missing part on the right side. I thought about not rebluing it but, I don't feel right leaving it in the white.

Personally I might just clean it up and do the wood and leave it. But I don't tend to hold onto some of this stuff that long after...so the outlay of cash would be wasted. Let it sit a bit and it will tell you what to do...
    Regards, Jim

That's probably good advice. I have 6 kids and all of them want my SKS's so this one will be going to one of then eventually, I still need two more so I'm looking for a couple Yugoicon's right now.

Kid's make a great excuse to buy firearms.
